Northumberland County Conservation District West Nile Virus Program: Mosquito Updates
Mosquito Surveillance and Virus Updates from 7/14-7/25
Northumberland County Conservation District West Nile Virus Program
Hi everyone!
The Mosquito Season is in full swing. With all the rain that we have had this year the season has been very busy!
Since this season has been wet, we are beginning to receive West Nile Virus positives. Our staff have been out and
about throughout the five counties we serve where positives have been discovered and treating and monitoring those
sites carefully. So far, we have had West Nile Positives in Northumberland, Montour, Snyder, and Union counties.
We have had to conduct one truck spray treatment in Snyder County as well. We will continue to keep all our
municipalities and counties up to date on what is happening throughout the season. In the meantime, please see
some of the precautions below to help protect yourself and residents from Mosquitoes.
Mosquito precautions include:
• Stay indoors during peak mosquito hours
o Dusk to dawn
• Wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toed shoes if possible
o Exposed skin may be at risk for biting mosquitoes
• Wear bug spray
o Specifically bug spray containing at least 30% DEET
• Remove all standing water from your property
o Birdbaths, wheelbarrows, and children’s toys can hold water which can breed
mosquitoes.
